Map and Photos of Brownsville The Brownsville neighborhood is about one square mile in size and is dominated by public housing
projects -- there are 18 low-income housing projects in Brownsville. NYPD's 73rd Precinct, which includes Brownsville, leads the city in
shootings so far in 2010. The violence stems from neighborhood gangs fighting turf battles.
The violence is nothing new to the neighborhood; during the 1930's and 40's, when the area was still a predominantly Jewish
neighborhood, Brownsville was the birthplace of the notorius Murder, Inc., also known as the "Brownsville Boys", contract killers who murdered hundreds of people on the behalf of the Mafia and their Jewish counterparts.
