Map of East New York, Brooklyn The development of East New York began in 1835 by John R. Pitkin, a wealthy Connecticut merchant and real estate speculator. A financial downturn in 1837 stalled developement until 1853. By the 1930s, the residents were mostly Italians, Jewish, Germans, and Russians who moved in from Brownsville, Bushwick, and other near-by areas that had become over crowded. Following World War II, the neighborhood saw a large influx of Puerto Ricans fleeing unemployment rates of 25% on the island, as well as an influx of African-Americans moving up from the American South. East New York had the highest crime rate in Brooklyn in 2007 with 31 murders and 613 robberies. You might enjoy the East New York slideshow on Flickr
