Map of Fort Greene, Brooklyn Ft. Greene is named after an American Revolutionary War era fort that was built here in 1776 under the supervision of General Nathanael Greene of Rhode Island. Fort Greene park includes the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument and crypt, which honors 11,500 patriots who died aboard British prison ships moored in near-by Wallabout Bay (which later became the Brooklyn Navy Yard) during the American War of Independence.
